Byzantine emperor. Son of Heraclius, the governor of Africa, of Armenian origin, and Epiphania. His father organized a revolt against the usurper Phocas in 610, sending a nephew, Nicetas, to secure Egypt while the younger Heraclius sailed to Constantinople, where he was crowned emperor on 7 October 610. The new emperor tried without success to reconcile the religious differences within the empire between the orthodox and Monophysite beliefs. He had to fight and expel the Persians, who occupied Egypt and other eastern provinces between 617 and 629, only to lose them to the Arabs from 641–642. He died in Constantinople on 11 February 641.
