Latin spelling of Greek Alexios, derived from a short form of various compound personal names with the first element alexein to defend. St Alexius was a 5th-century saint of Edessa, venerated particularly in the Orthodox Church as a ‘man of God’. In Eastern European languages here has been some confusion between derivatives of this name and pet forms of ALEXANDER (SEE Alexander).
