1 Biblical: name, meaning ‘enclave’ in Hebrew, borne by various minor characters. This name has only occasionally been used outside Ireland (see below).
2 Irish: from the Gaelic name Éibhear, assimilated in form to the biblical name. Éibhir was the name of the son of Míl, leader of the Gaelic race that, according to legend, first conquered Ireland. This is still a common given name among the McMahon families.
