Spanish (now also borne in the English-speaking world, mainly by Roman Catholics): from the Marian title, Maria de los Dolores ‘Mary of Sorrows’, a reference to the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin in Christian belief. The feast of Our Lady's Dolours was established in 1423.
