Duncan m
Scottish and English: Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Donnchadh, composed of Old Celtic elements meaning ‘brown’ and ‘battle’. The name was borne by a 7th-century Scottish saint, abbot of Iona, and a 10th-century Irish saint, abbot of Clonmacnoise. The Anglicized form of the final syllable seems to be the result of confusion with the Gaelic element ceann head during Latinization into Duncanus. The oblique case Donnchaidh is possibly the origin of the English word donkey (cf. CUDDY (SEE Cuddy)).
Pet form: Dunky.
