Italian and Spanish form of FREDERICK (SEE Frederick). This Germanic name was introduced to Sicily by the Normans, where it was borne by, amongst others, the son of the Norman queen Constance and the German emperor Henry VI. At the age of three, in 1197, Federico became King of Sicily; he later went on to become King of the Germans and Holy Roman Emperor. He was a patron of the arts and sciences, and in 1224 founded the University of Naples.
