Latin name, from the adjective augustus great, magnificent (from augēre to increase). This word was adopted as a title by the Roman emperors, starting with Octavian (Caius Julius Caesar Octavianus), the adopted son of Julius Caesar, who assumed it in 27 BC and is now generally known as the Emperor Augustus. This name, together with AUGUSTA (SEE Augusta), was revived in England in the 18th century, but it has now again declined in popularity.
