YAMAZAKI MASAKAZU
(1934–)
   Yamazaki Masakazu is a playwright, theater scholar, and literary critic from Kyoto Prefecture. He studied art history at Kyoto University and eventually received his doctorate there, following which he studied at Yale and taught at Kansai and Osaka universities. He garnered a reputation for solid analysis with his essay on the style of author Mori Ogai titled “Ogai: tatakau kacho” (Ogai: Combative Patriarch, 1972). Yamazaki has also been involved in politics, advocating for Japan to be more like the Western powers than its Asian neighbors. His works are included in high school textbooks and college entrance exams. Yamazaki has also served as a member of the Ministry of Education and Science’s Central Education Council.
