American rabbi and scholar. He was born in Luxembourg, and went to the US in 1866. He served as a rabbi in Baltimore and Louisville, and to the Chicago Sinai Congregation. He taught rabbinic literature and philosophy at the University of Chicago, and served as editor of the section on the Bible in the Jewish Encyclopedia. He was a spokesman for the radical wing of Reform Judaism.
