French rabbi and author. He was born in Paris. He held rabbinical positions in Mulhouse, Alsace and Paris. During the German occupation of France he worked with the Resistance movement. In 1950 he became chief rabbi of Paris, and in 1955 was appointed chief rabbi of France. He was a lecturer at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques and a member of the Academie des Sciences Morales et Politiques in Paris. His writings include Le Judaisme et la justice sociale, Racisme et Judaisme, French Jewry Under the Occupation, Le Judaisme dans la societe contemporaine and Temoignages sur Israel.
