Israeli orientalist. He was born in Stanislav in the Ukraine. He moved to Palestine in 1921 and became inspector of antiq-uities, and librarian and keeper of records for the Department of Antiquities. From 1923 to 1958 he was professor of Near Eastern art and archaeology at the Hebrew University. He published works on Islamic art, costume, epigraphy and numismatics.
