Ruppin, Arthur
(1876-1943)
   Palestinian Zionist, economist and sociologist. He was born in Rawicz, in the Posen district, and initially worked in the grain trade. From 1903 to 1907 he directed the Bureau for Jewish Statistics and Demography in Berlin. In 1907 he went to Palestine as a repre-sentative of the Zionist Organization. Later he founded various settlement companies and helped to establish labour colonization in the country. He was deported by the Turks in 1916, but returned in 1920. Subsequently he became director of the Zionist Executive's colonization department in Jerusalem. From 1926 he taught sociology at the Hebrew University. His writings include socio-logical studies of Jewry.
