Italian biblical scholar. He was born in Florence and became chief rabbi there and director of the Collegio Rabbinico Italiano. He was professor of Hebrew at the University of Rome, and from 1939 professor of Bible at the Hebrew University. He was editor-in-chief of the Biblical Encyclopaedia and prepared the Jerusalem Bible for publication. His other publications include studies of Italian history and Immanuel of Rome, and catalogues of the Hebrew manuscripts in Florentine libraries.
