French lawyer and statesman. He fought for the abolition of the oath more judaico. In 1843 he was elected president of the Central Consistory of French Jews. On several occasions he intervened with the government in an attempt to gain protection of Jewish rights in other countries. From 1864 to 1880 he served as president of the Alliance Israelite Universelle.
