(1899-1973)
Israeli military leader. He was born in Odessa and was taken to Palestine in 1906. From 1931 to 1939 he was commander of the Haganah in the Haifa district. In September 1939 he became the first chief of staff of the Haganah. With the establishment of the State of Israel, he became chief of staff of the Israeli Defence Forces. He was president of the Haifa Technion from 1951 to 1965.
