Israelite woman, wife of Er, the eldest son of Judah, and later wife of Er's brother, Onan. After Onan's death, Judah refused to allow Tamar to marry his third son, Shelah. In protest she disguised herself as a prostitute and bore twins by Judah (Genesis 38).
