Tamar
   1) (fl. ? 19th-16th cent BCE)
   Israelite woman, wife of Er, the eldest son of Judah, and later wife of Er's brother, Onan. After Onan's death, Judah refused to allow Tamar to marry his third son, Shelah. In protest she disguised herself as a prostitute and bore twins by Judah (Genesis 38).
   2) (fl. 10th cent BCE)
   Israelite woman, daughter of David. She was raped by Amnon, her stepbrother (II Samuel 13), who was killed in revenge by her brother Absalom.
