glucoamylase complex
the two heat-stable maltases in humans, also known as α-glucosidases [EC 3.2.1.20] (q.v.); they are described as a complex because the two enzyme activities are formed as a single polypeptide which is cleaved to form a heterodimer active within the brush border of the intestinal mucosa; the enzyme activities catalyze the hydrolysis of α-1,4 linked glucose residues from the nonreducing ends of disaccharides and oligomers such as maltose, amylose, amylopectin, and glycogen.
