glandula suprarenalis
[TA] suprarenal or adrenal gland: a flattened body found in the retroperitoneal tissues at the cranial pole of the kidney. In humans it consists of two components of different embryologic origin, the cortex and medulla. The adrenal cortex, under control of the pituitary hormone corticotropin, elaborates steroid hormones. The adrenal medulla elaborates the catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine. Called also adrenal or suprarenal body.
