nervus facialis
[TA] facial nerve: seventh cranial nerve, consisting of two roots: a large motor root, which supplies the muscles of facial expression, and a smaller root, the nervus intermedius (q.v.). Origin, inferior border of pons, between olive and inferior cerebellar peduncle; branches (of motor root), stapedius and posterior auricular nerves, parotid plexus, digastric, stylohyoid, temporal, zygomatic, buccal, lingual, marginal mandibular, and cervical rami, and a communicating ramus with the tympanic plexus; distribution: see individual branches, in this table and under ramus; modality, motor, parasympathetic, general sensory, special sensory.
