stratum functionale
functional layer of endometrium: the layer of endometrium facing the interior of the uterus, overlying the stratum basale; it is sometimes subdivided into the compact layer and the spongy layer. Its cells are cast off at menstruation and at parturition, and it is known as the decidua during pregnancy.
