A surgical incision in the vagina. The -tomy part of the word comes from the Greek tome meaning cutting.

an incision made into the wall of the vagina, usually the posterior vaginal wall, close to the cervix (posterior colpotomy). This was formerly used to confirm the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy, but has now been largely superseded by laparoscopy. Colpotomy is sometimes referred to as culdocentesis.
