deu·te·ri·um (D) (2H) (doo-tērґe-əm) [Gr. deuteros second] the mass two isotope of hydrogen (q.v.). It is available as a gas or as heavy water and has been used in metabolic studies; called also heavy hydrogen. Cf. protium and tritium.
