eth·a·nol (ethґə-nol) a primary alcohol existing as a transparent, colorless, volatile, flammable liquid, miscible with water, methanol, ether, chloroform and acetone; it is formed by microbial fermentation of carbohydrates or by synthesis from ethylene. Excessive ingestion results in acute intoxication, with psychological, gastrointestinal, neurological, and motor abnormalities; ingestion during pregnancy can harm the fetus.
