he·ma·tin (heґmə-tin) 1. a porphyrin chelate of iron (III) formed by the oxidation of free heme; the hydroxide of heme. It stimulates the synthesis of globin and inhibits the synthesis of porphyrin by inactivation of 5-aminolevulinate synthase and is a component of the cytochromes and peroxidases.
