Alanine
An amino acid, one of the 20 amino acids that serve as the building blocks in protein. Alanine is not an "essential" amino acid. (It is not essential to the diet, but can be made by the body from other substances. Alanine was discovered in protein in 1875. It is abbreviated Ala.

al·a·nine (Ala) (A) (alґə-nēn) 1. a nonessential amino acid, 2-aminopropanoic acid, occurring in proteins; high levels also occur free in plasma. It is synthesized from pyruvate. See also table at amino acid. 2. [USP] a preparation of alanine used as a dietary supplement.
