iso·zyme (iґso-zīm) one of various structurally related forms of an enzyme, each having the same mechanism but with differing chemical, physical, or immunologic characteristics. For example, lactate dehydrogenase, a tetramer, exists as five isozymes arising from different combinations of its two kinds of subunits. Called also isoenzyme.
