lipoxygenase
A class of enzymes that catalyzes the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acid s with O2 to yield hydroperoxides of the fatty acid s; 5-l. catalyzes the first step in leukotriene biosynthesis, acting on arachidonate. SYN: carotene oxidase, lipoxidase.

li·poxy·ge·nase (lĭ-pokґsĭ-jən-ās) [EC 1.13.11.12] an enzyme of the oxidoreductase class that catalyzes the oxidation of linoleate and related polyunsaturated fatty acids to their hydroperoxide forms. Called also lipoxidase.
