po·ro·ker·a·to·sis (por″o-ker″ə-toґsis) [poro-2 + keratosis] any of several chronic, progressive disorders of keratinization, seen most often in light-skinned persons. The characteristic lesion is round and craterlike with an atrophic center and an elevated, thick, keratotic border formed by a cornoid lamella; lesions may enlarge into circinate, serpiginous, or gyrate forms. Lesions can be premalignant, progressing to basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. It is sometimes inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder, but most cases are sporadic, and a number of factors, including ultraviolet exposure, infection, and immunosuppression, may be involved in its pathogenesis. porokeratotic adj
