- tropical p. a disease observed in Samoa and in tropical Africa, marked by pains in the extremities, fever of a remittent or intermittent type, and abscesses in the muscles in various parts of the body (may result in death from sepsis); causative organisms are Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, but usually the disease is associated with parasitic infections. SYN: bungpagga, lambo lambo, myositis purulenta tropica, tropical myositis.

pyo·myo·si·tis (pi″o-mi″o-siґtis) [pyo- + myositis] an acute bacterial infection of skeletal muscle, usually seen in the tropics; in temperate regions it may be seen in immunocompromised or debilitated individuals. It occurs spontaneously without other foci of infection and is most commonly caused by Staphylococcus aureus. The primary characteristic is suppuration followed by abscess formation within the fascial covering of the affected muscle or muscles.
