so·ma·trem (soґmə-trem) a biosynthetic pharmaceutical preparation of human growth hormone, prepared by recombinant technology, using Escherichia coli, and differing from the natural human hormone in containing an additional methionine residue at the terminus. It is used to treat growth failure and AIDS-associated cachexia or weight loss, administered intramuscularly or subcutaneously.
