Caved-in or funnel chest. The Latin “pectus” means “chest.” The chest is excavated. It looks as if it has been dug out, hollowed out.

[L. “hollowed breast”] a chest in which there is a funnel-shaped depression in the middle of the anterior thoracic wall, with the deepest part in the sternum. Called also foveated or funnel chest, funnel breast, p. recurvatum, and koilosternia. See illustration.
