: The organs that are involved in breathing. These include the nose, throat, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs.

the tubular and cavernous organs and structures by means of which pulmonary ventilation and gas exchange between ambient air and the blood are brought about; the chief organs involved are the nose, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and lungs. Called also systema respiratorium [TA] and respiratory apparatus or tract. See Plate 43.
