Old French title for an unmarried woman, and also for the wife of a *squire, the rank immediately below that of a knight. The word has been anglicised as 'damsel'. Less familiar is damoiseau, the male equivalent of damoiselle: a young man of good birth, not yet a knight's *esquire. -
