Modern form of the name used by the AS for the people of Wales (which like Walach and Vlach is derived ultimately from the Germanic word meaning 'foreign' or 'foreigner'). Waleis, the AnNor. form, is still found in the Scottish name Wallace. Wales was one of the places the ancient or native Britons migrated to or were driven to (Cornwall and Brittany were other refuges). [< OldEngl. Wealh/Walh] -
