Chapter
Orig. a section or chapter of the monastic rule, which was read daily to the assembly of the canons of a *cathedral or a *collegiate church; also the members of a monastic or knightly order. Later it came to refer to the assembly itself. The assembly met to listen to that reading and conduct other business. [< Lat. caput = head]
