Enfeoff
To put a person in possession of land in "fee simple. Thus a "tenant-in-chief would enfeoff subtenants (this was known as ""subinfeudation') who would be required to provide the knightly services which the tenant-in-chief was in turn required to bring to the king, as a part of his tenure. -
