(ADAD/ADDU/HADAD)
   North-Mesopotamian weather god responsible for both winter rains that ensured a good crop and also devastating storms. One of his main centers of worship was Aleppoin northern Syria. He was one of the most important deities in Assyria, where many temples were dedicated to him. At Assur there was a double sanctuary for him and his father, Anu. He often appears in royal inscriptionsas a warrior defending the Assyrian armyand was also invoked in curses. See also ISHKUR.
