⇒ used to express a negative attitude toward sth., indignation etc:
- where did you ever see (such a thing <anything like it etc>)?;
- who ever saw (who's ever seen) (such a thing <the likes of it etc>)?;
- who (who's) ever heard of (such a thing <anything like it etc>)?;
- it's (just <simply>) unheard of.
♦ "Наляпали золота кусками, аж отваливается. Где это видано, чтобы столько тратить!" (Сологуб 1). "They've scattered pieces of gold in the sky, and it's already falling off. Where did you ever see such waste!" (1a).
♦ "Они говорят - где ж это видано, чтоб человек проживал непрописанный в Москве" (Булгаков 11). "They say-who ever saw such a thing, for a man to live in Moscow unregistered?" (11a).
♦ "Степановна... кур твоих испортили. Где ж это видано! Ведь таких и курьих болезней нет! Это твоих кур кто-то заколдовал" (Булгаков 10). "Stepanovna...I'll say your chickens got the evil eye. Who's ever seen the likes of it? Why, there ain't no chicken sickness of this kind! Somebody sure bewitched your chickens" (10a).
♦ "Да где ж это видано, чтобы народ сам по себе собирался без всякого контроля со стороны руководства?" (Войнович 2). "Who ever heard of people assembling all by themselves, without any control on the part of the leadership?" (2a).
♦ "Личные интересы поставил товарищ выше общественных! Где это видано?" (Аксенов 1). "This comrade has put his personal interests before his social obligations! It's unheard of!" (1a).
