Lorenzetti, Pietro
(ca. 1280-ca. 1348) and AMBROGIO (after 1290-1348)
Sienese brothers, prominent artists succeeding to the position of Duccio and Simone Martini as Siena's leading painters. Pietro is known for his frescoes in the council chamber of his city, while Ambrogio's works include frescoes in the lower church at Assisi. Both brothers worked in the last great medieval artistic style, International Gothic, though their work also shows the influence of the greatest Florentine painter of the preceding generation, Giotto, who is often viewed as a precursor of the artistic Renaissance.
