A Norwegian essayist, critic, and dramatist, Kjær published several collections of literary and other essays, among them Essays—Fremmede Forfattere (1895; Essays on Foreign Writers), Bøger og Billeder (1898; Books and Images), Smaa Epistler (1908; Small Epistles), Nye Epistler (1912; New Epistles), and Svundne Somre (1920; Summers of the Past). His first play, Regnskabets Dag (1902; The Day of Reckoning), takes aim at moral and ethical relativism, while Det lykkelige Valg (1913; The Happy Election) is a witty and satirical comedy in which a longtime member ofparlia-ment loses an election to his wife.
