(1889-1962)
A Norwegian dramatist, critic, and essayist, Krog started out with two plays about social injustice. Det store vi (1917; The Big We) dealt with abuse of the power of the press, and Jarlshus (1923; Earl's House) presented a labor conflict. Krog s most successful dramas, however, depict unconventional women in a lighthearted manner. The female protagonist in Konkylien (1929; The Conch Shell) goes from one man to the next in her search for ideal love, while the heroine in Underveis (1931; tr. On the Way, 1939) refuses to marry in spite of the fact that she is pregnant. In Opbrudd (1936; tr. Break-Up, 1939), the protagonist, Vibeke, rejects both her husband and her lover for their selfish individualism.
