Sult
A novel by the Norwegian Knut Hamsun, Sult (1890; tr. Hunger, 1899) is set in Christiania (now Oslo) and tells about its narrator's mental self-experiments as he periodically starves himself in order to observe the effects of starvation on his mind. Hamsun's breakthrough novel, Sult is an early example of literary modernism.
