Israelite prince, eldest son of Saul. He was a devoted friend of David. Together with Saul, he was killed in a battle against the Philistines on Mount Gilboa. The news of their deaths caused David to compose his famous lament (II Samuel 1:17-27).
2) (fl. 2nd cent BCE)
Israelite head of state (160-143 BCE) , youngest son of Mattathias. Together with his brother Judah Maccabee, he fought in the battles at the beginning of the Hasmonean revolt (166-164 BCE). On the death of his brother, he took over the leadership of the anti-Syrian campaign. Alexander Balas (a contender with Demetrius I for the Syrian throne) conceded to him the title of high priest and recognized him as governor of Judah. He was captured by the Syrian leader Tryphon at Acre and killed.
