ti·ta·ni·um (Ti) (ti-taґne-əm) [L., from Gr. Titan a child of Uranus and Gaia] a dark gray metallic element of widespread distribution but occurring in small amounts; atomic number, 22; atomic weight, 47.90; specific gravity, 4.5; used for fixation of fractures. Titanium and its alloys are the most common metals used in dental implants because of their excellent biocompatibility when in contact with hard or soft tissues and their low corrosion rate due to formation of a stable oxide surface film through passivation.
