mus·cu·lus (musґku-ləs) gen. and pl. musґculi [L., dim. of mus mouse, because of a fancied resemblance to a mouse moving under the skin] muscle. [TA] (in the pl.) muscular system: in official terminology, the muscles (generally restricted to the skeletal muscles), bursae, and synovial sheaths considered collectively. Called also systema musculare [TA alternative].

The names occurring here are often used without the word musculus, e.g., rectus abdominis for musculus rectus abdominis.
